Notes from Andy Nulman talk at #GEW #DawsonEweek. Founder of Airborne and Just For Laughs.
Dreams and larceny, Stupidity and luck, and darn hard work, are the keys to success.
Airborne sold 100m rebought for 1$ then brought to the ground as Apple released the iphone. Missed apple, desperation is great, moving from Web to mobile in weeks, but not to Apple, because it was at the top of its game, Airborne became complacent.
Retrofitting intelligence : you make this ridiculous decision and you say way back then we thought of this instead of just “stumbled upon”. It was out of desperation. And we got lucky: right place, right time, but ton of hard work. You say the “you sold for 100m”, seems like overnight success, but forget the hard work and potential to sell the house if broke.
In any great partnership, you have to find your opposite, but the one you want to work with, not kill! It takes time to find the right partner, but you gotta try it to find it.
No shame at going to friends and family or networking, but you still only get one shot for a first good impression.
And remember, it’s a lot about good time and good place, but you gotta try it to find out!
